    WARNING — RISK OF BEING CUT OFF BY THE RISING TIDE. The channel and tidal flats at Ballydehob Harbour present a serious hazard as the tide floods. The ground that allows access at low water can be covered by the rising tide faster than it appears, and once the water is up there is no safe way back. This is not a theoretical danger — anglers have been caught out here. Know your exit route before you begin fishing, keep a close eye on the tide at all times, and leave the channel well before the water reaches your access point. This mark is not suitable for beginners or anyone unfamiliar with fast-rising tidal conditions.

    Flounder are the primary target at Ballydehob, and the mark fishes best from low water through the early stages of the flood before the tidal hazard requires a retreat. Lugworm and ragworm presented on a simple paternoster or running leger in the channel produce consistent sport on the right tide; the fish are often not large, but they are reliable through the summer and into autumn. Keep one eye on the clock and one on the tide at all times.

    Sea trout are encountered at Ballydehob as they stage in the harbour on their migration toward the spawning rivers. Spinning with small metal lures on the incoming tide can intercept fish as they move through the channel — sea trout in good condition and unpredictable in their movements, making them an exciting if uncertain target. Anglers targeting sea trout must hold a valid inland fishing licence issued by Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI), and must check current regulations with IFI before fishing for them. Licence requirements and any restrictions on sea trout fishing are subject to change, and it is the angler’s responsibility to comply with current rules before beginning.
