    Courtmacsherry is one of West Cork’s most established shore angling destinations, offering a combination of pier fishing and a productive strand within easy walking distance of the village. The pier is the venue for conger after dark — large mackerel or a flappered bait fished tight against the structure on heavy gear is the accepted approach, and fish of good size have come from this mark. Through the day and into the evening, bass work the pier area on peeler crab and sandeel, while thick-lipped mullet are a reliable summer target from the pier wall; a waggler float with ragworm or breadflake and light line is the way to approach them. Flounder are available year-round on lugworm and ragworm fished on simple bottom rigs from the pier, and gilthead bream have been recorded from the area in summer, taking crab and worm baits from the sandy ground.

    The strand below the village is the primary bass venue, with September through December the acknowledged peak window as fish move inshore ahead of winter. Peeler crab and sandeel on the flooding tide account for the majority of bass, and specimens — fish above the recognised specimen weight — are on record from Courtmacsherry strand. Codling show in the colder months on worm and mackerel bait. Anglers intending to retain bass should consult current bass regulations with IFI before fishing, as regulations apply. Courtmacsherry is a well-served village mark that is welcoming to visiting anglers and accessible at all states of the tide. The IFI Cork sea-angling survey data from which some historical records of this mark derive dates from the 1980s, so local information from tackle shops or angling clubs is always worth gathering to supplement published guides.
