Inch Strand is a long, open beach on the outer harbour that offers consistent bass fishing from late spring through to November. It is approachable and beginner-friendly, with good road access and straightforward fishing that rewards those willing to work the tide.

Bass Along the Eastern Shoreline

The eastern shoreline of Inch Strand is where the bulk of the bass fishing is concentrated. On a flooding tide, bass push along the waterline in search of food, and working lures parallel to the shore — covering ground as you move — is the most effective strategy. Plugs and spinners cast into the breaking surf and retrieved with a steady action will take fish throughout the flood. The bite window often opens as the tide begins to push and remains productive until about two hours after low water.

Lure Fishing Techniques

Surface lures fished in the early morning or evening can produce spectacular takes from bass hunting in the wash. Soft plastics — sandeel imitations in natural colours — are also highly effective and a reliable choice when fish are present but not responding to harder lures. In the warmer months, the bass at Inch Strand can be visibly hunting in the surf, and casting to moving fish is one of the more exciting forms of shore fishing available here.

Bait Fishing

When lure fishing is slow, a bass beachcaster with lugworm or peeler crab on a simple running ledger can produce fish. Cast into the gullies and troughs that form on the flooding tide and allow the bait to work naturally. Fresh peeler crab is a particularly strong bass bait from May through July when crabs are moulting in the harbour system.

Tidal Awareness

Inch Strand has a significant tidal range. On spring tides, the strand floods quickly and the water can advance faster than expected, particularly if you are wading or standing at the lower end of the beach. Always note the tide times before arriving, remain aware of the water level around you, and never wade deeper than knee height in surf conditions.
