The Munster Blackwater is without question Cork’s most significant salmon river and one of the great game fisheries in Ireland. Rising in the mountains of north Co. Kerry, it flows eastward for over 160 kilometres through County Cork — passing through Mallow and Fermoy — before crossing into Co. Waterford and reaching the tide at Cappoquin. It is Ireland’s fourth-longest river and carries one of the country’s largest salmon runs.

The Fishery

The Blackwater is a spate river: its character is strongly driven by rainfall and water levels. After a period of low summer water, a rising spate brings fresh salmon running upriver and triggers the best fishing. Spring salmon — heavier, multi-sea-winter fish — enter the river early in the year. Grilse, the lighter one-sea-winter fish, arrive from June and the run intensifies through July and August. The best grilse fishing is typically towards the latter part of the season when water temperatures are higher and fish are more active and well-distributed through the system.

The river also holds resident wild brown trout, particularly in the middle and upper reaches and in the tributary streams. Brown trout are smaller on average than reservoir fish but are of good quality and in condition. Sea trout enter the tidal and lower reaches during the summer months.

Access and Day Tickets

The Blackwater is largely private water. Day-ticket access is available on the Blackwater Salmon Fishery, which operates the Upper and Lower Kilmurry beats downstream of Careysville weir, below Fermoy. These beats are among the better-known accessible stretches. A number of fishing hotels and clubs along the river also offer day or weekly rod access — enquire locally.

Methods

Fly fishing is the classic and most widely used method. On the wider lower and middle beats, a double-handed rod (Spey or switch) of 12–15 ft in a #8 or #9 line class is well suited to covering the big pools. Shrimp patterns, tube flies and Ally’s Shrimp-style patterns are popular on the Blackwater. On narrower upper beats and tributaries, a 10 ft single-handed #6 or #7 covers most situations.

Spinning is permitted on some beats and is effective, particularly in higher, coloured water after a spate. Confirm the permitted methods with the fishery before using a Flying C, Toby spoon or similar lure.

Worm and shrimp fishing is permitted on some beats when water is high, but is restricted on catch-and-release fisheries. Check the specific rules of your beat before fishing anything other than fly or spinner.

2026 Season — Catch-and-Release Only (Verify Annually)

As of the 2026 season, the Munster Blackwater is classified as catch-and-release only under Conservation of Salmon and Sea Trout (Catch and Release) Bye-law No. 1024 of 2026. No salmon or sea trout over 40 cm may be retained on this river in 2026. Anglers targeting those fish must use single or double barbless hooks and may not use worms.

This classification is reset every year by Inland Fisheries Ireland based on the river’s annual conservation limit assessment. The 2026 C&R status does not predict 2027 or any future year’s status. Licence Requirement

A State salmon and sea trout rod licence is required to fish this river for salmon or sea trout. Licences are available from IFI. You must also carry and apply your gill tags correctly, and keep a catch logbook. See the Salmon and Sea Trout Regulations page for the full framework.

No State licence is needed for brown trout on this river, but you must hold a valid permit for your specific beat and comply with the brown trout season.
