Shepperton Lake (also known locally as Shreelane or Shepperton Lakes) is a managed trout fishery near Skibbereen. It holds wild native brown trout as well as rainbow trout stocked to maintain angling returns. Day and season permits are available through Inland Fisheries Ireland.
The Fishery
Rainbow trout are stocked regularly, while wild brown trout are also present. Artificial flies are productive, particularly from a boat, but the current fishery rules also permit a worm fished on a float or a small spinner.
Fish typically average 1–3 lb, and the setting in West Cork’s green countryside makes for a pleasant day even when the fish are not feeding actively.
Permits and Rules
A fishery permit is required. The published 2026 season runs from 1 April to 30 September and permits a single rod using fly, worm or spinner, with a four-trout daily bag limit. These are fishery rules rather than permanent national rules, so review the current permit conditions before each visit. A State salmon and sea trout rod licence is not required for brown or rainbow trout here.
