    The Timoleague Estuary on the Argideen River is a sheltered, atmospheric mark set against the backdrop of the old Franciscan abbey, and it carries a strong reputation for specimen-class bass among West Cork anglers. The tidal pool below the abbey and the channel running beneath the road bridge concentrate fish on the two hours either side of high water, when the moving tide creates feeding opportunities along the banks and over the sandy-muddy bottom. A single-hook trace carrying peeler crab or a live sandeel worked slowly with the current is the most consistent approach; bass in estuarine conditions tend to be methodical feeders and a natural presentation will consistently outperform heavier rigs. Always check current bass regulations with IFI before retaining fish, as restrictions apply.

    The quay wall in Timoleague village is one of the more reliable West Cork locations for thick-lipped mullet from late spring through to early autumn. Fish can often be seen patrolling in clear water on warm days, and a waggler or small pike float carrying ragworm at depth — trotted slowly with the tide — is the accepted method. Fine line and a patient, quiet approach are essential; mullet here can be selective and are quick to spook in the clear estuary water. Flounder are present across the muddy and sandy bottom of the estuary throughout the colder months, responding to lugworm and ragworm on simple bottom rigs. Timoleague is a convenient and accessible mark well worth a visit on any flooding tide from summer through to late autumn.
