Unlike general sea angling, which in Ireland does not currently require a licence for most species, fishing for sea trout (Salmo trutta) or Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) requires a valid State rod licence issued by Inland Fisheries Ireland. Fishing for either species without a current licence is an offence under Irish fisheries law.

There is no single opening date or closing date that makes every river legal to fish. Most Irish salmon and sea trout rivers close on 30 September, while a limited number remain open for sea trout through 12 October. Local bye-laws can impose an earlier closure or additional restrictions. No river remains open for sea trout after 12 October.

Always check the current annual river classification, the season for the individual fishery, and local permit conditions before fishing. A licence does not override a closed river or closed season.

Salmon fishing is also subject to a licence requirement and, in addition, carries mandatory catch reporting obligations. The rules governing salmon fishing — including any river-specific bye-laws — should be confirmed with Inland Fisheries Ireland before fishing.

Licences can be obtained through IFI and authorised licence distributors. For current licence fees, availability, and any additional conditions or bye-laws, visit:

Sea trout do enter Cork harbour marks, estuaries, and surf beaches. The licence requirement applies when targeting sea trout in coastal as well as fresh water. If one is caught incidentally while fishing for another species, handle it carefully and return it immediately; do not continue targeting sea trout without the required licence, open season, and permission.
